Sustainability: One of Our Four Values

Sustainability: One of Our Four Values

If you couldn't tell by our tagline, "Be kind. To you. To Earth.", we love our planet. Earth is our only home, so we must treat with her respect. In today's blog post, we discuss how we uphold our value of sustainability, and give you advice on how you can make more sustainable fashion choices.

Eco-Friendly Packaging

All of our shipping supplies are eco-friendly!

  • Our polymailers and bubble mailers are made with a plastic alternative and are biodegradable.
  • Our boxes are plain ol' cardboard, and the tape we use is paper-based, so it's all recyclable.
  • Instead of using plastic wrap, we protect all of our items with kraft tissue paper (also recyclable!)
  • We opt out of attaching hang tags to our apparel with un-reusable microplastics. We're looking into alternative, more sustainable options.

Recycled and Organic Materials

We strive to make our products as eco-friendly as possible. That means for the most part, we use recycled polyester or organic cotton for items like hoodies and blouses. Our accessories, like stickers and pins, are also made from recycled materials. You can check out each product's description for more information. Where it was difficult to source recycled or organic materials for certain styles, we made sure to work with suppliers who enforced safe and fair labor. We don't just care about the planet, but its people too.

Other Earth-Conscious Things We Do

In addition to our products and our packaging, we try to be sustainable in our business practices and our every day lives. For example, we order inventory in limited quantities to reduce waste; and in some instances, we make items on demand, as soon as they're ordered. We also try to re-use and re-purpose wherever we can. Irene, Founder of My Therapist Said, turned a spare bedroom into a mini warehouse/office space instead of renting additional storage. And nearly all of the furniture in that office was re-purposed from old furniture that was left in the garage. In the future, when we start doing in-person market events, we will also incorporate as many eco-friendly decorations as we can.

How to Curate a Sustainable Wardrobe

Making more sustainable fashion choices involves being mindful of the environmental and social impacts of the clothing you buy and wear. Here are some tips to help you make more sustainable fashion choices:

  1. Buy Less, Choose Well: Invest in high-quality pieces that are durable and timeless, rather than trendy items that you'll only wear a few times. This reduces the need for constant consumption and lowers your overall environmental footprint.
  2. Opt for Natural and Organic Materials: Look for clothing made from organic cotton, linen, hemp, or bamboo, as these materials have a lower environmental impact compared to synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon. Additionally, choose materials that are biodegradable and renewable.
  3. Support Ethical and Transparent Brands: Research brands to ensure they have fair labor practices, pay fair wages, and prioritize worker safety. Look for certifications like Fair Trade or B Corp that indicate a commitment to ethical and sustainable practices.
  4. Choose Secondhand and Vintage: Extend the life of clothing by shopping at thrift stores, consignment shops, or online marketplaces for secondhand and vintage clothing. This reduces the demand for new clothing production and minimizes waste.
  5. Care for Your Clothes: Extend the lifespan of your clothing by following care instructions, washing them less frequently, and repairing items when needed. This reduces the need for replacements and minimizes waste.
  6. Participate in Clothing Swaps and Rentals: Host or attend clothing swaps with friends or participate in clothing rental services to access a variety of styles without the need for constant purchasing. This reduces the demand for new clothing and promotes a circular economy.
  7. Support Sustainable Initiatives: Look for brands and initiatives that are actively working to reduce their environmental impact, such as using eco-friendly dyes, reducing water usage, or implementing recycling programs.

Conclusion

Remember, every small step toward sustainability makes a difference. By choosing brands that prioritize the planet and making mindful fashion choices, you can contribute to a more sustainable future. Let's work together to protect our planet and create a more eco-friendly fashion industry. Be kind to yourself and be kind to the Earth. You deserve it. She deserves it.
